A Huntsville, Ala., man has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for bank fraud and tampering with vehicle odometers, the Department of Justice announced last week. He has been ordered to pay $109,000 in restitution, $28,000 in fines, and will spend three years in supervised release after serving out the term of his sentence.
Randy Eugene Greene, owner and operator of RJ Auto Sales, was convicted on 11 counts of tampering with an odometer and three counts of bank fraud against Redstone Federal Credit Union for financing three of the vehicles on which odometers had been changed. Greene was engaged in the fraudulent activity from October 2014 to November 2017.
Odometers on the vehicles were rolled back as much as 218,678 miles, the DOJ noted, with the average discrepancy falling at 122,046 miles. Local news station WAFF 48 has reports going back to 2006 that Greene was engaged in unfair or deceptive acts or practices against consumers at another dealership.
