FTC to Give Cybersecurity Guidance at Performance & Compliance Summit

William Hoffman
Dama Brown, the Federal Trade Commission’s regional director of the Southwest region

A representative from The Federal Trade Commission will give a presentation at the Auto Finance Performance & Compliance Summit this year for an update on cybersecurity regulation.

The conference will take place May 9 and 10 at the Omni Dallas.

Dama Brown, The Federal Trade Commission’s regional director of the Southwest region, will speak about identifying and responding to threats, how to eliminate third-party risk, and avoiding costly breaches. As regional director, she leads the activities of a team of attorneys, investigators, and support personnel in protecting consumers from unfairness, deception, abuse, and other unlawful business practices, according to her LinkedIn.

Brown will run attendees through a 10-point presentation of lessons learned from former FTC enforcement actions. While many of those actions have been against other forms of consumer credit, auto lenders should still keep a watchful eye on these issues that apply to the automotive space as well, she said.

Additionally, Brown will provide the latest guidance from the FTC, which is in its own state of transition as four commissioners appointed by President Donald Trump wait in the wings for confirmation from Congress.

She joined the FTC in 2006 as a staff attorney, where she served for seven years before being promoted to regional director. Prior to joining the FTC, she was a litigation lawyer for her own practice in the greater Detroit area. Brown received her Juris Doctor degree from Wayne State University Law School and her bachelor’s degree from Eastern Michigan University.

Other sessions on the agenda include Auto Finance Economics & Climbing Yields; Portfolio Management to Strengthen Underwriting; Practical Guidance for Developing a Compliance Program; and Practical Strategies for Fighting Fraud.

The Auto Finance Performance & Compliance Summit is the essential industry event for education and networking focused on best practices in operations, management, and compliance. Formerly the “Auto Finance Risk & Compliance Summit,” this revamped event offers a top-notch conference experience tailored toward professionals motivated to explore new trends and network with the most influential decision-makers in the industry.
