The Department of Consumer Affairs in New York City began an investigation on July 31 to see if local dealers were selling unrepaired, recalled vehicles. Subpoenas were issued to 200 dealerships that had received complaints or violations concerning safety defects in the
past.
Dealers were asked to supply information on their policies for selling unrepaired recalled vehicles, data about such sales, and proof that consumers were notifi ed in those transactions. The action in New York follows a call by Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) for additional regulation from the Federal Trade Commission for dealers who sell used vehicles. “More cars have been recalled in 2014 than in any other year on record,” said DCA Commissioner Julie Menin.
