Georgia Dealers Association Takes On Tesla

Larissa Padden

teslaTesla Motors is involved in yet another dispute over its direct-to customer sales model, this time with the state of Georgia. The Georgia Automobile Dealers Association filed a complaint with the Georgia Department of Revenue last week, according to a published report, claiming that Tesla had sold more cars than it was allowed. Georgia state rules restrict Tesla to selling fewer than 150 cars directly to customers per year. However, according to complaint, the electric car company sold 173 cars from October to June. A petition from the GADA, which represents 500 dealers, is requesting that the state agency suspend Tesla’s license and revoke its right to sell in Georgia. Tesla has faced arguments regarding its direct sales approach in other states, including Texas, where a resident looking to purchase Tesla vehicles must do so out-of-state.
