Toyota Financial gears up digital customization for Mazda

SAN DIEGO — While Toyota Financial Services preps for the April 1 launch of its Mazda Financial Services business, the captive is “redesigning architecture” to be a multi-tenant company, said Chief Information and Digital Officer Vipin Gupta at the Auto Finance Innovation Summit on Tuesday.

In fact, since TFS announced late last year it will serve as Mazda’s private-label finance provider, taking over from Chase Auto, Gupta has zeroed in on the captive’s shift to become a “digital mobility finance company,” saying, “It’s about customization for Mazda and Mazda dealers, and the idea is that we expand this to other brands.”

Further, the MFS business has ushered in a startup culture for the 37-year old captive. “Startup culture has a bias for action,” Gupta said. “Startups are comfortable with uncertainty, and if you want to build a digital future your staff needs to be digitally savvy.”

In that light, TFS has begun to conduct internal, executive-level scrum meetings every two weeks as the captive builds new software to execute on its digital customization.

“We are launching new things every few months to move forward in small increments with a larger picture in mind,” Gupta explained. This month, TFS also launched its first Innovation Lab to create a space for employees to share digital ideas and test technology.
