Motorhome values fall 9% YoY

Motorhome and towable values fell year over year in April but continued an upward climb sequentially — falling in line with the simultaneous increase in both segments reported in March. The dual month-over-month increase in March was the first since May 2023. The sequential increase in values is not unusual given that March and April are historically more profitable for dealers due to increasing temperatures and higher demand, Eric Lawrence , principal automotive analyst for specialty vehicles at Black Book , told Auto Finance News . “Not every person that comes in to buy a new RV is going to have a trade-in, so dealers have to supplement their used offerings at the auction,” he said. “A lot of people who want an RV can't afford a new RV, so they're going to be shopping in the used market.” April motorhome values rose 5.9% sequentially but fell 9.4% YoY to $59,231, according to the most recent data from Black Book. The average motorhome model year at auction was 2016, Lawrence said, adding that models were “a couple of years newer” than usual, attributing it partially to higher values. The sequential increase in volume in April follows typical trends at auction for this time of year, Lawrence said. “People don't really buy in the late fall or winter unless they're in a spot where the weather is nice,” he said. “We're in the nice weather and the nice selling season, so you would expect everything to pick up a little bit.” May motorhome and towables values are projected to be similar or slightly higher than April auction values, Lawrence said. “Everything is happening as it should for the season,” he said.
