BMW e-bike still 5 years from release

BMW Motorrad is five years away from releasing an electric motorcycle, despite demoing a prototype last month, according to Chief Executive Markus Schramm.

“As the Vision DC Roadster concept shows, we see this as a power portfolio of the future,” Schramm told Cycle World. “In the urban environment, it is possible that there will be an electric BMW motorcycle in five years. In the touring, off-road, and sport segments, I am not sure that we will see them.”

It seemed that BMW was increasing momentum on the production of an electric motorcycle. The company unveiled the concept for the Vision DC Roadster in June 2019 and filed for patents for a frameless e-bike design and wireless charging. More recently, the OEM demoed a prototype called the E-Power Roadster for European journalists in December.

However, even though motorcycles “as a product become more and more important,” electric mobility will not be important to motorcycles for another five years, Schramm said.

Currently, the C Evolution electric maxi-scooter is the OEM’s only electric two-wheeler on the market.
