Antonakes Joins Eastern Bank in Boston

Larissa Padden

Antonakes; CFPB photoSteven Antonakes, former Consumer Financial Protection Bureau deputy director, will now serve as senior vice president and chief compliance officer at Eastern Bank in Boston, according to a press release Monday. In his new role, Antonakes, formerly the second in command at the CFPB, will report directly to Barbara Heinemann, executive vice president of Eastern Bank’s Enterprise Risk Management division.

Antonakes stepped down from his position at the CFPB in mid-July and relocated to Boston permanently in order to be closer to his family, he wrote in an email to his staff. Since joining the CFPB as assistant director, large bank supervision in 2010, Antonakes commuted between Boston and Washington D.C.

Antonakes previously was appointed by successive governors to serve as the Massachusetts commissioner of banks in December 2003, a position he held until joining the CFPB in 2010, according to the release. During his time at the CFPB, Antonakes was responsible for the supervision of all banks and non-banks under the Bureau’s jurisdiction and the enforcement of federal consumer protection and fair lending laws.

Following his departure from the bureau, Meredith Fuchs, general counsel at the CFPB, was named acting deputy until a permanent replacement can be appointed.
