New technologies are emerging to help in the recovery of assets. License plate recognition is one of the latest and sounds promising but has it had an impact yet? Is there enough coverage (cameras), access to data, or a large established repository to support the solution? Is the data needed readily available?

Has anyone used or been exposed to the technology who could respond?

The best way to ensure your finance dollars is to keep track of your vehicles through ALL possible methods. Camera coverage is really years behind. You need to have resources like ebay, state ran vehicle databases, tow yards, police agencies, etc..to really be effective.

We here at Locator Technologies are the leaders in vehicle recovery. The camera technology you speak of is years behind. Big brother keeping tabs of everyones license plates is a very touchy subject. It's a line that not many citizens want crossed (but it would be very valuable tolien companies, thats for sure!)

We have used this technology somewhat. The idea and technology is great. The issue we have had is the pricing model. There is no predictive cost structure. When we are looking over our portfolio we are looking to have a predicitive cost analysis to let us know exactly where we stand. Also, we question the legal repercussions, and worry about the news media about the "Big Brother" issue. Look at what they did with the phone breaking, that was a year long hanging.

I read the Locator sales information below, and agree to some extent with them. However, we decided to go with NICB for our impound, stolen, stolen locate, export information to cover this area of exposure.
David, Hello. My name is Jack Bernstein. I am the COO of Locator Technologies. I saw the the comments and agree that LPR technology has a great future, and present.

I am sorry that you went with NICB. How is that working out for you?

Jack
There are many answers to these questions. I was recently at a convention and 3 LPR companies were there. DRN, MVTRAC and FORTUM. When you compare those 3, there is a big enough gap to drive a bus through them.

DRN has the largest network and the prices are ok for the cameras. The problems is that DRN captures the data "we" provide then resells it and is making big money off of it. MVTRAC the cameras are way to expensive! They claim they are better cameras but LPR cameras are close to each other in technology. MVTRAC does manufacture them, so you have to compare cameras from the manufacturer level. Fortum who is new to the game has the best plan available however they do not have a database built or lenders on-line or hand so this has to be built. Over time each LPR camera company will grow and this should revolutionize repossessions for the times.

If we could all team up, build a happy team we could all work together and grow in every aspect. I am not sure if this will ever happen, but I do have high hopes.
