As many as half of the 600 collectible cars were damaged during a severe storm at the Russo and Steele Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., last night.

Though the auction’s main display tent was intact, two others were destroyed — and the damage to the cars underneath could reach $1.5 million, one insurance executive estimated.

The wind ripped into the tents around 6 p.m., with 5,000 to 10,000 people in attendance. The auction was evacuated, and Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer declared a state of emergency.
