Two months after luring customers with five-year, 1.9% financing, Daimler Financial Services will make Smart cars available for lease.

The “Value Days” financing scheme, which expired at yearend, enabled payments as low as $198 per month. Daimler Financial’s lease program, meanwhile, will offer Smart ForTwo Pure coupes for $169 a month for 36 months. Customers will have to put down $999, plus pay a $595 acquisition fee and the first month’s payment at lease signing.

Smart cars cost between $11,990 for the ForTwo Pure and $20,990 for the Brabus cabriolet. Sales of the vehicles fell 40.7% last year, according to Autodata.

How effective are leases on vehicles with sticker prices in the $13,000 to $17,000 range?
