House lawmakers in favor of legislation to create a Consumer Financial Protection Agency edged out those opposed to the measure by a vote of 223-208. The dissenters had hoped for a council that would have coordinated between existing bank regulators to bolster consumer protection and write rules for bank capital. Instead, the CFPA will be charged with regulating consumer credit products.

Passage of a comparable Senate bill is expected to take months.
