Financial reform is at the top of Pres. Barack Obama’s priority list.
In a speech yesterday, Deputy Treasury Secretary Neal Wolin accused the U.S. Chamber of Commerce — the luncheon’s host — of lying about what the financial regulation overhaul would do. Wolin was referring to the chamber’s $3 million ad campaign against the reform.
“The chamber has every right to oppose those policies with which its members disagree,” Wolin said. “But as a leading, respected institution, the chamber also has an obligation to be honest with you, its members, and with the American people.”
Wolin's comments came shortly after Obama met at the White House with key lawmakers working on the financial overhaul. The president wants to move quickly on the legislation, Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.) told reporters after the meeting.
